Safe Areas (Avoid Cropping)
Position text and logos away from edges to avoid UI overlays (e.g., play button, timestamp) and ensure legibility in small previews (~100×56 px).
- Thumbnails (1280×720): ~60–70 px inset on each side.
- High-res 16:9 masters: scale that inset proportionally, e.g. ~180–210 px at 3840×2160.
- Channel Banners (2560×1440): Stay within the 2048×1152 safe area.
- Always preview on a phone and in YouTube Studio’s thumbnail tool.
Note: Use ImgTool’s canvas to visually check safe areas while framing.
YouTube Shorts Thumbnails
YouTube Shorts use a vertical 1080×1920 (9:16, max 2 MB) thumbnail. Custom thumbnails are supported in some regions; otherwise, select a frame during upload.
- Use the YouTube Shorts (1080×1920) preset in ImgTool.
- Keep key elements centered to avoid cropping in previews.
- Check YouTube Help for regional custom thumbnail availability.
Step-by-Step: Create a Thumbnail with ImgTool
-
1 Load Your Image
Click Upload Image or drag & drop/paste. The preview loads instantly. -
2 Select a Preset
In YouTube Presets, choose YouTube Thumbnail (1280×720), YouTube Shorts (1080×1920), or YouTube Banner (2560×1440). The Width/Height inputs update, and Lock aspect ratio ensures 16:9 or 9:16. -
3 Frame Your Image
Select Resize Mode:- Cover: Fills the canvas without distortion (best for thumbnails; edges may crop).
- Contain: Fits the whole image with possible letterboxing.
- Stretch: Exact fit but may distort (avoid for thumbnails).
-
4 Add Text & Branding
In Text & Watermark, add a short title (5–7 words). Choose Font Family, Font Size, Text Color, and Text Position (Top/Center/Bottom). Optionally, add a logo in Add Watermark Logo (default: bottom-right). -
5 Apply Filters (Optional)
In Filters, select a style (e.g., Brightness, Contrast). Adjust Filter Intensity lightly to maintain readability. -
6 Export
Choose Download format: JPG (photos, ~85–90 quality) or PNG/WebP (text/graphics for sharp edges). Click Download. YouTube accepts JPG, GIF, or PNG for custom thumbnails, and upload limits depend on device; use Compress if needed.
Design Tips
- Limit to three elements: subject, title, brand/mark.
- Use large, bold text; test at phone distance.
- Maximize contrast (e.g., light text on dark shapes).
- Zoom into faces/objects; remove clutter.
- Test in YouTube Studio’s preview tool for legibility.
Variants & Repurposing
Start with 16:9 thumbnails, then adjust for Shorts (9:16) or banners using the same workflow: preset → mode → zoom/pan → text → export.
